Bicycle Facilities & System Master Plan Survey Results
In preparation for this document, a mail-out survey was conducted in April and May of
1993 by the City of Las Cruces. The survey was sent to one thousand (1000),
randomly-selected addresses to collect bicycle information for each household. The
following information was derived from BFSMP responses for the City of Las Cruces.
- 67% of all homes surveyed own at lest one bicycle; whereas, approximately 96% of these
same homes own at least one car.
- Surveyed households that own a bicycle responded that at least one member rode their
bicycle to the following destinations and/or purposes:

- 57% of households questioned responded that members ride their bicycle at least weekly.
- Responses from all households that own a bike show that average bicycle riding distance
is well balanced for all distanced (from less than 1 to greater than 5 miles).
- City streets are the preferred riding surface for almost 69% of responding households.
Sidewalks are second at 10%.
- The two favorite riding times are between 7:00a.m.-11:00a.m. and after 5:00p.m. for both
weekdays and weekends, peak automobile traffic periods.
- 42% of households had at least one member who is aware of existing bike facilities.
- 34% of respondents listed safety concerns as their main reason for not riding their
bicycles. Lack of time was second (17%).
- 77% of all respondents agreed with the need for bicycle riding facilities.
- 73% of all respondents also stated that they would use a bicycle facility, if it were
provided.
- 52% of households felt that safety was the most important issue when implementing bike
facilities. Connected facilities was second (13%).
