Land Uses

Land use patterns and characteristics play a major role in the development and use of bicycle facilities.  Land uses must be closer to one another for bicycles to be used as a convenient form of transportation.  When land uses such as residential areas and places of employment or shopping are far apart, it is more convenient for people to use their automobiles.  However, mixed land uses in which places of employment and retail and service establishments are closer to residential areas of the community, riding a bicycle to work or for shopping may be more convenient than fighting traffic and hunting for a parking space.
