The City of Las Cruces developed a document entitled "Guidelines for Bridle Paths and Bicycle Lanes" in the early 1970's (approximately December 1973). This document outlined specific issues for both equestrian and bicycle facilities; including the justification for such facilities, design and construction criteria, signage requirements, and cost estimates for implementation. The title of the document indicates the use of only bicycle lanes; however, the guideline defined and listed requirements for the use of bicycle paths, lanes, and routes.
This Guideline included exhibits of proposed facilities, total miles, and a five-year plan of implementation. Currently, only four of the proposed thirty facilities within the "Guidelines for Bridle Paths and Bicycle Lanes" have been partially installed. These facilities include the Amador Avenue, Locust Street, and South Main Street bike lanes; and the University Avenue bike path (see Table 1, Existing Bicycle Facilities). Parts of the Valley Drive, Triviz Drive, and Union Avenue bicycle facilities were also listed within the "Guidelines for Bridle Paths and Bicycle Lanes."
