Economic and Health Considerations

The mandates of ISTEA require that bicycle facilities funded with federal funds be principally for transportation.  However, the use of a bicycle for transportation can also be considered for matters of improved health and economics.

In using a bicycle as a mode of transportation, the bicycle rider \receives an improvement to his individual health.  The bicycle provides exercise and enjoyment, both of which improves the quality of life for the individual.  The development of bicycle facilities also provides for the potential increased health and quality of life for all residents of the community.  Additionally, the pollution-free aspects of bicycle usage provides an improvement of the overall health of the entire population.   The placement of bicycle facilities on streets parallel to major arterials or thoroughfares can lead to a decrease impact on the bicyclist by not being forced to fight traffic congestion or automobile pollution.

Bicycles, as experienced within other regions and communities, serve as a viable and economical mode of transportation.  Bicycles are easy to maintain, less expensive to purchase, and provide easier mobility for those who cannot or choose not to use an automobile.  This holds true especially for shorter trips, younger age groups, and for trips made by utilitarian (everyday/expert) cyclists.  Also, as automobile parking and traffic become congested, bicycle facilities will provide easier mobility to all travelers.
